The film chronicles the chaotic, highly dysfunctional reunion of the Collins family following the sudden passing of the paternal patriarch, Edmund (Rip Torn). The central perspective belongs to Kate (Zooey Deschanel), an analytical, relatively well-adjusted college student who is unexpectedly tasked by her grandmother Charlotte (Piper Laurie) with delivering the funeral's official eulogy. Kate is forced to piece together a coherent speech out of the surrounding emotional wreckage, culminating in a disastrous, wildly funny funeral service that turns the concept of family honor entirely on its head.
