Set in the mid-17th century, the film opens with the coronation of Christina (Malin Buska), who has been raised as a prince at the behest of her late father, King Gustav Adolphus. Crowned "King" rather than Queen, the young monarch inherits a court dominated by conservative Lutheran statesmen, led by Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (Michael Nyqvist), who are eager to conclude the bloody Thirty Years' War and secure the crown's future through a royal marriage.

However, Christina is entirely disinterested in the expectations of her court. Gifted with a brilliant, insatiable intellect, she invites the radical French philosopher René Descartes to her palace, determined to drag Sweden out of the dark ages and transform Stockholm into an enlightened, progressive capital.

The court’s anxiety peaks when Christina rejects all male suitors and falls deeply, obsessively in love with her beautiful new lady-in-waiting, Countess Ebba Sparre (Sarah Gadon), whom she openly refers to as her "bed-fellow." As their intense, highly scrutinized romance blossoms, Christina's political enemies use her relationship, her rejection of the Lutheran church, and her modernizing impulses to label her a dangerous heretic. Trapped between a court demanding an heir, a deeply religious society, and her own unyielding desire for complete intellectual and personal freedom, Christina is forced to make a radical choice that will shock the entirety of Europe.

Festival Darling: The film made a massive splash at the 2015 Montreal World Film Festival, where it won both the prestigious Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature and the Best Actress prize for Malin Buska's fierce performance.

A Long-Gestating Passion: Director Mika Kaurismäki was fascinated by Christina for over a decade before filming. He chose to collaborate with writer Michel Marc Bouchard because Bouchard had already deeply researched the queen for his successful stage play La Reine-Garçon.

Historical Echoes: This film provides a modern, explicit counterweight to Rouben Mamoulian’s classic 1933 film Queen Christina, which starred Greta Garbo. While the 1933 version had to censor the monarch's sexuality due to Hollywood's Hays Code, The Girl King places her relationship with Ebba Sparre at the emotional center of the story.
