On Swift Horses

Set during the dawn of the 1950s, the story revolves around Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her brother-in-law Julius (Jacob Elordi). Both find themselves profoundly out of place in the newly structured, cookie-cutter post-war society. Muriel is a newlywed trying to build a traditional, quiet life in San Diego with her steady, predictable husband Lee (Will Poulter), a WWII veteran. However, beneath her quiet exterior lies a sharp, analytical mind and a deep restlessness.

Julius, Lee's younger brother, is a charismatic, deeply guarded drifter who is secretly gay. After returning from his own service, Julius avoids his brother's path and heads straight to Las Vegas. There, he enters the vibrant, dangerous subculture of casino gambling and encounters Henry (Diego Calva), a charming, smooth-talking Mexican blackjack dealer. The two spark an intense, forbidden romance that shifts Julius's world, but their bond is constantly threatened by the violent, unforgiving realities of mid-century homophobia.

Meanwhile, back in California, Muriel discovers a hidden passion of her own: she begins secretly placing bets on racehorses. Guided by her instinct and intelligence, she starts winning, finding an unexpected community among the racetrack bookies and a fiercely independent bartender, Sandra (Sasha Calle). As both Muriel and Julius parallel each other in their double lives, the narrative weaves their separate journeys together—demonstrating how two family members use the unpredictable world of gambling to carve out a sense of autonomy in a society designed to constrain them.
