Directed by Luca Guadagnino—and serving as the foundational first chapter of his celebrated "Desire Trilogy" alongside A Bigger Splash (2015) and Call Me by Your Name (2017)—I Am Love is an operatic, visually intoxicating exploration of passion, class constraints, and sensual awakening

Set in Milan at the turn of the millennium, the story centers on Emma Recchi (Tilda Swinton), a Russian-born woman who married into a wealthy, conservative Italian industrialist dynasty. Bound by strict high-society etiquette and cold domestic routine, Emma’s world begins to fracture when her son Edoardo Jr. partners with Antonio (Edoardo Gabbriellini), a gifted, passionate young chef. An unexpected culinary encounter with Antonio’s cooking awakens long-dormant desires within Emma. As the two embark on a clandestine, deeply sensual love affair amidst the lush landscapes of Sanremo, Emma sheds her icy aristocratic facade. However, her passionate rebirth sets off a catastrophic chain reaction that fundamentally alters the Recchi family legacy forever.

💡 Did you know? An 11-Year Linguistic & Passion Project: Tilda Swinton and Luca Guadagnino spent over 11 years developing the concept for the film together. To prepare for the role, Swinton—who also co-produced—learned to speak fluent Italian with a specific Russian accent, as well as Russian itself, mastering complex emotional monologues in two foreign languages.
