Deadly Illusions

The story follows Mary Morrison (Kristin Davis), a highly successful, happily married crime novelist who has long retired her famous thriller series to focus on raising her twins. Her peaceful life is disrupted when her husband, Tom (Dermot Mulroney), makes a disastrous financial gamble, losing half of their life savings. Desperate for money, Mary's publishers offer her a massive $2 million advance to write one more book.

Plagued by severe writer's block and knowing that she completely loses herself in a dark, alter-ego headspace whenever she writes, Mary decides she needs help around the house. Through a high-end agency, she hires Grace (Greer Grammer)—an angelic, soft-spoken, and seemingly perfect young woman from an idealized rural background.

As Mary deepens her writing process, her reality begins to split. She experiences highly vivid, erotic, and violent interactions involving Grace—some seemingly real, some clearly hallucinatory projections of the book she is actively typing. The tension skyrockets when Mary discovers her best friend Elaine (Shanola Hampton) stabbed to death, and the police begin pinning the crime directly on Mary. The third act descends into chaotic mystery as Mary unravels Grace’s hidden past, uncovering a history of severe childhood trauma and a split personality dynamic, culminating in a frantic facility showdown where the audience is left questioning what was real and what was merely a manuscript's construction.
