Becks (Tony Award winner Lena Hall) is a talented, Brooklyn-based musician who gives up her career and life in New York to move to Los Angeles with her girlfriend, a successful singer-songwriter on the rise. However, shortly after arriving in LA, Becks suffers a crushing heartbreak when her girlfriend unexpectedly breaks up with her.

Broke and humiliated, Becks moves back to her suburban St. Louis hometown to live with her devoutly Catholic, conservative mother, Ann (Christine Lahti). To earn a living, she takes a job playing guitar at a local dive bar and begins giving guitar lessons. Her routine shifts when she meets Elyse (Mena Suvari), the unsatisfied wife of a wealthy former high school classmate. As their music lessons blossom into an unexpected and passionate secret romance, Becks finds both her voice and a new direction forward.
