My Take:
Mary McArdle (the phenomenal Seána Kerslake) just got out of prison and returns to her hometown of Drogheda. She’s angry at the world, abrasive, and... she’s supposed to be the maid of honor at her best friend Charlene’s wedding. The problem is, nobody believes Mary can find a plus-one. As she desperately hunts for a date, she finds something (and someone) completely unexpected. This is a story about how sometimes the person we need to reconcile with most is ourselves.
What's Captivating: Authenticity. This movie isn't "glossy." The Irish streets are grey, the dialogue is punchy (and full of brilliant accents), and Mary is a character you want to hug and run away from at the same time. The budding romance between Mary and Jess, the wedding photographer, is handled with such sincerity and subtlety that it truly hits home.
A Word of Caution: Mary isn't a "nice" protagonist from minute one. She’s difficult and makes mistakes. But that’s exactly why this film is so great—it’s a real portrait of someone feeling lost in their own life.
Verdict: 9.0/10 🇮🇪❤️
Honest, funny, and moving. The ultimate proof that Irish cinema has a soul.
🔍 Did you know...?
The film is an adaptation of the stage play "10 Dates with Mad Mary" by Yasmine Akram. Seána Kerslake was hailed as a "generational talent," and the film won Best Picture at the Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA). Interestingly, the chemistry between Mary and Jess felt so natural because the actresses spent a lot of time hanging out in local pubs together before filming to nail that authentic, effortless vibe.
