🎬 MOVIE REVIEW:Contracted

Premise & Narrative
Contracted (2013) is a visceral, low-budget body-horror thriller that unfolds across three excruciating days. The story centers on Samantha (Najarra Townsend), a young woman struggling with personal relationships and substance recovery, who attends a party where she is sexually assaulted while intoxicated by a mysterious stranger.

In the hours following the assault, Samantha begins to experience alarming physical symptoms. Rather than a standard viral infection or STI, her condition rapidly accelerates into a grotesque biological breakdown, forcing her to confront isolation, denial, and total loss of bodily autonomy over a terrifying 72-hour period.

Themes & Narrative Execution

Body Autonomy & Trauma: At its core, the film functions as a dark, uncomfortable metaphor for physical trauma, guilt, and the psychological impact of violation.

Social Alienation: As Samantha's physical state deteriorates, her attempts to seek comfort from her controlling mother, her partner, and her friends fall flat—highlighting systemic denial and emotional isolation.

Slow-Burn Degradation: The plot progresses chronologically day by day, systematically escalating the horror from subtle physical changes to extreme biological collapse.

Visual & Directorial Style
Director Eric England uses clinical, cold interior lighting to mirror the sterile feeling of illness. The makeup and special effects team deliver a slow, highly effective visual transformation without relying heavily on CGI. The camera frequently lingers on bathroom mirrors, tight domestic spaces, and close-ups of physical decay, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that forces the viewer into Samantha's shrinking world.

Verdict
Contracted is an uncompromising, squirm-inducing entry in modern indie body horror. While the supporting characters can occasionally feel frustratingly oblivious to the protagonist's obvious transformation, Najarra Townsend's fearlessly committed lead performance elevates the film into a memorable, deeply unsettling genre experiment.
